Freight market update
Dive into our latest Air & Ocean Market Update, where we share key insights into the evolving air and ocean freight landscape – including demand trends, capacity shifts, and rate developments.
Air freight market overview
Global air cargo demand rose 4.0% year on year in April 2026, regaining momentum after the slowdown in March. Growth was led by Asia Pacific, up 10.5%, with Africa, Europe and North America also expanding, while the Middle East fell 18.2% as airspace restrictions continued to affect key Gulf hubs. Capacity contracted slightly, with ACTK down 0.4% year on year, supporting firmer load factors. Rates stayed elevated on rerouted corridors, though pricing pressure eased compared with March as fuel costs moderated.
Ocean freight market overview
Global container freight rates have risen sharply, driven by an early peak season and tighter capacity on the key East West trades. Volumes are growing on most lanes, led by Far East to Europe at an estimated 10 to 15% year on year, while Far East to US is recovering and transatlantic flows hold firm. Rates have climbed across the board, with the strongest increases on the Transpacific, up around 25 to 40% versus May. Despite continued fleet growth, ongoing Red Sea diversions are keeping effective capacity tight and the market firm.
